Professor Tim Reynolds

Consultant Chemical Pathologist / Metabolic Physician

Based In: Harley Streets

GMC registration 2926157

Prof Reynolds has been a consultant at Queen;s since 1993. When he joined the hospital he started the metabolic medicine clinic which caters primarily for patients with lipoid (cholesterol / triglyceride) disorders, offering assessment of cardiovascular risk, and where appropriate tteatment of high cholesterol. This clinic provides the local link to the East & West Midlands Regional Familial Hypercholesterolaemia genetic screening services. Treatments provided by the lipid clinic include the usual statin drugs but also newer agents such as PCSK-9 inhibitors (Evolocumab), and Bempedoic acid. The Burton lipid clinic has close links with teaching hospital clinic around the country and as an early adopter of PCSK-9 drugs was a significant contributor to an audit of their effectiveness published soon after their being made available in the UK (Kohli M, Patel K, MacMahon Z, et al. Pro-protein subtilisin kexin-9 (PCSK9) inhibition in practice: lipid clinic experience in 2 contrasting UK centres. Int J Clin Pract. 2017; e13032. https://doi.org/10.1111/ijcp.13032). It is expected that a similar publication on the effectiveness of Bempedoic acid will be written following its introduction into practice in September 2020. As well as dealing with hyperlipidemia, the clinic also provides testing for patients who have developed kidney stones, with the aim of preventing future attacks, and testing / treatment of a range of unusual genetic problems, such as alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, fish odour syndrome, etc.
